Video Summary

This landscape photography tutorial focuses on two essential composition principles: the Rule of Thirds and Leading Lines. The instructor emphasizes that while many complex rules exist, mastering these two is sufficient for beginners to create compelling images.

Rule of Thirds [02:02]

  • The Grid: Mentally divide your frame into a 3×3 grid. Placing your focal point (a tree, building, or lighthouse) at one of the four intersection points creates a more pleasing and balanced image than centering it [02:31].
  • Balance: Using this rule helps balance the “weight” of a scene, especially when you have a strong subject on one side and open space on the other [03:42].
  • Exceptions [05:08]: For symmetrical scenes, such as reflections in a harbor or a bridge with a centered subject, it is perfectly acceptable to break the rule and use a central composition [05:30].

Leading Lines [06:33]

  • Definition: Using natural or man-made lines within a scene to draw the viewer’s eye from the foreground toward the background or the main subject [06:44].
  • Infinity Look: Lines that start broad in the foreground and narrow as they move toward the background create a powerful sense of perspective and depth [07:06].
  • Common Examples:
    • Piers and Bridges [07:31]: Classic structures for creating depth.
    • Roads and Railway Tracks [07:44]: Highly effective, though safety is emphasized when shooting on tracks [08:32].
    • Light [08:13]: Even paths of light can act as leading lines if positioned correctly.
